The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the Mobile County Metro Jail. This facility houses an average of 1,500 inmates per day and is the detention facility not only for the county but for the city of Mobile as well. Metro Jail includes a main jail facility plus a minimum security barracks, which provides inmate labor to parks, facilities and events across the county. This labor source saves taxpayers more than $1.5 million each year. The jail provides a comprehensive range of necessary services to inmates, from food and medical services to education and rehabilitative programming

Inmate Mail 1:
At the Mobile County Minimum Security Barracks inmates can receive written letters from their friends and family. These letters must be 12”x16” or smaller. Inmates cannot receive a number of things through the mail which incudes stamps, writing paper, pencils, pens and envelopes. Through the commissary these items are available for the inmates to purchase. These items will be disposed if they are sent to an inmate. Inmates can receive up to ten 4"x6" unframed photographs. However these photographs cannot be Polaroids. Inmates can receive paperback books, newspapers, and magazines. These items are required to be sent directly to the jail from the publisher or bookstore. All books will need to be paperback and brand new. Hardcover and used books are not permitted.
